Impact of the 2022 Social Laboratory of the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador in the Villamil Playas City

The Universidad Internacional del Ecuador implements its community practices through the social laboratory methodology, which generates synergy between different academic programs in a specific geographical area to achieve a greater social impact. This research aims to analyze the impact of the 2022-2024 social laboratory of the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador developed in the Villamil Playas city. This study is mixed-methods. The quantitative part is implemented through two independent samples at two points in time: before and after the intervention. The initial sample consisted of 39 households, and the final sample consisted of 59. Both samples were collected through convenience sampling in the commercial area of the Villamil Playas city. The qualitative part corresponds to an action research design. Faculty and students identified the specific needs of each beneficiary and carried out personalized interventions and training. To analyze the impact, a test of difference in means was conducted using the SPSS statistical package. The results show significant differences in the perception of problems by household heads between participants in the initial and final samples; however, there is no significant difference in economic or commercial variables of the businesses. The researchers conclude that issues of insecurity, lack of infrastructure, and informality negate the positive effect of the interventions through community practices.
